Art of 2016

It's that time of year again! I'm doing this a bit earlier since my tablet isn't working which stifles my chances of being able to create more pieces. This year has been an interesting year with my artwork so it's fun to look back. I want to continue trying new things into 2017 (perspective and backgrounds would be nice) but we'll see how it goes.

For now, here's a look at my art in the year 2016

Robert Sheehan sketch

Another day another sketch of a dude, and this time the perfect dork Robert Sheehan.

Sam Claflin Sketch

Apparently all I can draw is good looking men. Not complaining too much. This was a much quicker sketch. Less than an hour. I think I'm satisfied. I think.

Barry Allen Sketch

I'm trying to get past this artist block but all I can manage are sketches of Barry Allen/Grant Gustin because I'm obsessed with this show. I meant this to be quick but it took much longer than expected.

Ressurected Hands

The second part of this piece featuring Christ appearing to Mary when resurrected.

I wanted this finished by Easter but WE CAN SEE HOW THAT WENT.

This is my attempt to break my artist block.

Oh look it's a sketch

I haven't done anything in so long so here's a quick sketch of Jonathan from Stranger Things. Gol I'm rough.

Breathe

Breathe is a story that is really close to my heart. It features characters that were the very first I ever wrote, and I abandoned it years ago for personal reasons. Buuuut I decided to give it a second chance upon making this cover for fun then realizing I could enter it into the Watty Awards. I'm entering two books but posted this one today, which is nice because it's finished. It'll also have some illustrations in it.

Made with Canva.

Concept Warm Up

Forever posting warm ups. This is also a concept sketch for Kesara in Gold & Smoke, which you can read here.

Probably going to make this into a full novel. Proooobably.

Neutral Chic Warm Up

One of these days I'll have a finished piece to share.

This was what I wore yesterday. Nearly everything seen is second hand save for the shoes, which are platform loafers if you can't tell. I felt rather chic. And I'm not one to wear neutrals. I'm very much a colorful person. But anyway, here's my warm up sketch for the day. I think I'll draw more of my outfits because why not?

To A Woman So Heartless

Quick piece based on the song Heartless and an art piece by Rene Gruau. Nice and simple, but it does fit the stylization project.

Sunkissed: Gold & Smoke

I'm a last minute addition so I made a quick piece to go with it. I'd also like to see these characters in a full length novel... Maybe one day.

Poe Dangyerhard

Poe Dameron warm up that I got frustrated with. He's crazy hard to draw.a

Ice Cream

Finally got around to finishing this and figured I'd post it since I have something scheduled to post tomorrow and such.

Ice Princess Posters

Needed some sort of graphic/poster for Ice Princess so I made these. I'll probably make more in the future. Done with canva.

Jareth Warm Up

Veeeery quick warm up of Jareth from Labyrinth since it is the 30th anniversary. I'd rather do a full picture but I have other pieces to do, so this is it for now.

Disney Meets the 50s Part 1

The story goes that one day my sister asked me to draw Anna and Elsa in Rockabilly outfits for a phone case for her. Several years later I'm finally finishing. I've done about five versions of these pieces. The style always changes, often the design and outfit is just tweaked. It really depends on the character.

Here's part 1
Snow White
Cinderella
Sleeping Beauty 1
Sleeping Beauty 2

Shoulder Pads

I've been wanting to draw 80s Jean Grey ever since I saw Apocalypse. 100% here for 80s Superhero films. Quick warm up for today.

Voltron Warm Up

My sister wouldn't shut up about Voltron (which I'd basically brushed aside when I saw it was a mecha show) but I finally gave it a try after seeing a funny video on tumblr and couldn't stop. So my warm up today is of Keith because his bonding moment with the red lion solidified him as my favorite (prior it was between him being charismatic, Shiro and his great hair, and Lance) (Lance almost beat out Keith for favorite when he appeared in his slippers and robe in episode two) (but awkward Keith hugging the slug dude beat him again).

So yeah. That's a thing.

Disney Grease AU

Warm up that I spent more time that I meant to (and it’s not even good...).
Tangled Grease AU anyone? I can’t stop thinking about it. But with a little bit of magic? Like can this be a thing?
Sandy! Rapunzel and Danny! Flynn/Eugene at the diner. But she’s not taking his crap.
Gol I just love the 50s...

Those Magic Changes

Break the block warm up of Doody from Grease Live because I’m STILL obsessed. I listen to this song on repeat more than I’d like to admit. But COME ON. He’s like black Buddy Holly with the voice of an angel. That’s Janine crack.

Cupcakes A La Mode Line Art

3/7 of the drawing a day challenge. I'm too tired to finish coloring so here's the line art, which is nice to see sometimes. I finished two other drawings today but those are for my illustrated story so I didn't want to share them before it's posted.

I had cupcakes a la mode today and it was divine guys. DIVINE.

Also these two are my life.

A Vision in Sweaters

A "quick" sketch of vision in a sweater. I meant it to be a quick sketch but holy crap Vision is not easy. I was so annoyed I didn't bother with a clean line art. Vision was one of my favorite things about Civil War. And good golly Paul Bettany is a beautiful man.

2/7 of my goal!

(Guys I came so close to drawing Sousa)

In Mourning Forever

I can't begin to describe what this show meant to me (so I'll just do so on Instagram). I might put this in the shop later tonight. Just a simple drawing. My goal is to draw every day this week.

Spring Dreaming

Details:

Look! Look! A finished piece! A FINISHED PIECE!

I started this (and two other pieces still unfinished) in FEBRUARY. Half of what took me so long is I kept changing my mind on how I wanted to go about it. It was supposed to be a simple easy piece but NOPE. None of that. Oh my hands hurt so much working on this one.

Anyway, the inspiration behind this piece is that it was cold and snowing and I was dreaming of spring. Also the flowers used have meanings that describe the girl in the picture, who is actually a dear dear friend of mine. The pictures used as a reference for her actually had snow in the background, come to think of it. And her hair isn't that pinkish. I just adjusted the colors slightly.

Well I'm just glad it's finally done. Hopefully I can finish those other pieces ASAP. I still have an Easter art piece to finish.

My other frustration with taking so long on this is I haven't been able to finish anything else except maybe a warm up or two. But let's just hope this means more finished pieces are coming. I really miss having more to show.

Note: I might touch it up later.

Rain Clouds

A warm up!

And yes, I'm alive.

Because of a busy work schedule I haven't been able to finish anything. That's not to say I haven't worked on anything, it's just not finished.

This was inspired by a rainy day at work. I love rainy days and found myself staring at the mountains (as I'm oft inclined to do) and thought up this little lady. It's nothing special, but it's nice to have SOMETHING decent to show.

Frenchie Warm Up

I've been in a Grease (and PPZ) mood since I watched the live version and have wanted to draw it forever. I wasn't planning on drawing Frenchie but Carly Rae just owned that pink hair (but Boys II Men were the biggest disappointment... No one compares to Frankie). I get why a lot of people were disappointed in her solo but what bugged me is this was a perfect scenario for a "Who's Sorry Now?" Connie Francis-esque song but instead it felt more pop singer.

Anyway I don't always share my warm ups but I thought she looked cute. So here you go!

A Story Is Coming

For some time now I've been trying to figure out what I want to do with this story. Ice Princess has been a project of mine for some time now and I'm very fond of it, but I wanted to do something different with it.

I wanted to illustrate it.

I didn't want to publish it so I tried to figure out how I could do this. While Wattpad is going to be offering a way to add multi media to stories and does for some already, I had to add even more to the story and there was already a huge "the end" chapter that was 18 pages long. So I decided on a different format while still keeping the Wattpad one up (I can't really say goodbye to all those views).

My intention is to do a weekly post with illustrations added to each chapter. This will lead on to the sequel and the companion novel and all be done for free online. It's taken me some time though because I'm a total perfectionist and cannot find any satisfaction in the art pieces I've done so far. I drew a cover image for the first chapter then decided to draw three variant covers since it didn't do it for me. I ended up going with my fourth choice.

This is just a preview of what's to come. The first chapters will be up on February 12th. But you can read the first thirteen chapters up on Wattpad now.

UPDATE: You can now start reading!!

The Tree of Life

Second Stylization piece for January. One more to go! The Sunday of the 17th I was asked to draw the Tree of Life and Lehi's vision found in 1 Nephi for the class. It was just a quick sketch but I kept staring at it with my mind whirling as to what I could do for a real piece. I came across an art piece in the Stylization folder on Pinterest (which is private I might add) and came up with this. It came out looking a bit more like a stain glass window, but I don't mind one bit. And it was quick and easy.

This also suits my goal of doing more religious art pieces.

Audrey

I did this back in high school and never got around to finishing. It's not meant to be political. I just figured it should get finished... Even if it's only taken me around 7 years...

This is not a drawing and I don't claim any of the... things used here. It was just a fun thing I did as a teenager that I finished up today.

I'm not really counting this for my monthly 3 stylization pieces because it's suuuper old.

Self Portrait 2016

Here is my self portrait for 2016 that also happens to be part of the stylization project to build up a more varied portfolio. I realized while working on this that the pictures used for reference (while taken in 2016) are from before I got my hair trimmed. But it'll grow back to that soon enough. I don't love the patterns on the hair but the point was for them to be imperfect and almost silly. It also looks like I did major contouring on my face.

Originally there were butterflies and dragonflies in the background but they got screwed up in Sai so I scrapped it. The patterns you see in the hair are inspired by Scandinavian vintage patterns from the 50s to the 70s. I've determined no one does design better than Scandinavians.

But hey! Here's my self portrait. I tried to take my time. And look! It's a bit of a digital painting. I'm getting better. :)

The Art of 2015

2015 was my least productive year creatively. And I'm not just talking about art. I didn't finish a single writing project this year but started maybe three or four? It was actually a really rough year in general and I'm hoping that I can move past this and do better in 2016. But, to follow tradition, here is my year in review.

So here are my favorite pieces, which isn't much since there wasn't much done. Go figure.
